What is The Pack?
The Pack is an art school designed for the wild— for life beyond the institution, beyond the art object, beyond the art market, and beyond any preconceived notion of an art school.
Our focus is process—becoming, transforming, and evolving— rather than fixed points of view. With an emphasis on drawing, members of The Pack develop lasting creative habits through individual experimentation, intuitive goal setting, practice, and communal accountability.
Who is The Pack for?
Creative beings who’ve lost their practice to the demands of a busy life
Art School graduates seeking rehabilitation from the onslaught of others’ opinions
Seekers who wish to explore personal and interpersonal connections through drawing
Professional artists with post-show ennui and an empty studio
Those who wouldn’t consider themselves artists but wish to develop a creative practice
Artists seeking community for added perspective on their process
Folks in search of creative momentum
Anyone out of touch with the creative forces that drive them
Everyone fatigued by institutions (all kinds)
I'm Sarah Grass, founder and facilitator of The Pack—an artist and educator based in Ridgewood, Queens, NY. The Pack is a blend of my studio practice and teaching philosophy. I use drawing as a processing tool for self actualization and I teach based on habit formation and the power of collective growth. I designed The Pack to be a social club for our introverted processes. The primary concern is discovering what drives us, rather than how and where we fit in. The Pack is a wilderness for conception and creation, for artists' inquiry rather than artists' statements.
I teach Drawing and Sculpture at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) and have taught drawing workshops for the New York School of Art (NYSA) in Washington, DC and Shanghai, China. I received a BFA in Fine Arts and MFA in Art Practice from The School of Visual Arts in New York, NY and my work has been exhibited across the US and internationally, including Satellite Art Club, Brooklyn NY (2021), Eve Leibe Gallery, London, UK (2021), Field Projects Gallery, New York, NY (2020), Leftfield Gallery, Los Osos, CA (2020), Spring Break Art Fair, New York, NY (2020), Art on Paper Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2019), The Ferry Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (2018), JustMAD Art Fair, Madrid, Spain (2017) the New School for Social Research, New York, NY (2016), and the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, TX (2015).
